As a painter, I find inspiration from exploring details in nature and the emotions that emerge from the intersection of reality and wonder. My primary medium is acrylic paint on wood or canvas. I search for the nuances between value and hue, building layers that create depth; a contrast between sharp elements and areas that blend into the atmosphere, an interaction between space and emotion. My commissioned pieces are designed to tell a story. I work closely with my clients to explore their experiences with the subject and transfer their emotion to the canvas.

“I want to grab a piece of all this, of this sacred place, and say something with paint about the sky and the sea and the horizon and how it affects me.”
— Pat de Groot

I had the pleasure of working as an artist and an educator for almost 20 years before I took time off to raise my family. I worked in special effects animation on several feature films, taught gifted elementary students, graduate instructional designers and pre-service teachers. I also designed and developed a variety of training materials for the classroom and online instruction. I began producing commissioned paintings and instructional design materials when we relocated to the Twin Cities. This site presents some of my most recent work. I hope you enjoy your visit.
